Star Trek Syllable Review

A friend of mine "in the industry" had a chance the check out the J.J. Abrams-directed Star Trek last night, so I asked him to provide me a one-word review. Instead he offered this in three subsequent text messages:

A.
Maz.
Ing.

Cute, though I wasn't sure if he was trying to make fun of me for struggling to help a second-grader nail the right answer on a practice state test this week, but that's neither here nor there...

The both of us are admitted non-fans of the original series, movies, spin-offs, fan-fiction, etc., etc., etc. so for all we know Abrams rewrites the Star Trek bible and we are unable to speak to any blasphemy that may incur. But we agreed that anything Abrams does or Bad Robot-affiliated is worth the time. Plus, I always appreciate the attempt to have a film with such a deep-seeded fanbase attempt to reach out to everyone as if to say, "Hey, it's OK. You may not know the secret Klingon hand signal or whatever, but you too can enjoy this ride!"

Again, turns out the new flick is worth more than just that. Or as my friend put it:

"Oh, and Chris Pine in his underwear?? A sight to behold...made me believe in God."

While that might not quite be what some trekkies (trekkers? Ugh...) are wanting to hear, I was also told in a follow-up conversation that the entire cast nails their roles (again, so far as he could tell as a non-fan, but then again, have you seen Zachary Quinto as Spock? I mean, how is he NOT related to Leonard Nimoy?!) and the theater of jaded critics and press junket folks who've seriously seen it all stood up and applauded at the end.

Personally, I'm ready to find my religion...

Star Trek hits theaters May 7.

OMG I'm so excited! I mean, what's better than Star Trek meets LOST?? I'll watch anything JJ Abrams does. And being a trekker (or "ie," whatever), I'm still excited to have a "non-fan" take a whack at it.

and btw, I agree that Spock is basically Zac Quinto's birthright.
