Academy Awards 2010: 'Avatar,' 'Hurt Locker' top nominations (full list)

This year's Academy Awards will be a David-vs. Goliath showdown between former spouses John Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow as his Avatar and her The Hurt Locker each vie for nine Oscars.

Avatar comes into the awards boasting the biggest box office take ever, with $2 billion and counting, while The Hurt Locker is the independent contender that the Academy usually lives for. Both have raked in their fair share of big trophies this awards season, but The Hurt Locker's nine noms pulled off a stronger upset over Jason Reitman's Up In The Air, which many have considered Avatar's biggest competition.

Sci-fi fan favorite District 9 managed to score a Best Picture slot, along with The Blind Side, which has only been kind to Sandra Bullock (a Best Actress nominee) so far. This year will mark the Academy's big experiment of including 10 Best Picture nominations over the usual five, though most have predicted that the category is really a competition between five films at this point anyway, i.e. Avatar, The Hurt Locker, Up In The Air, Inglorious Basterds and Precious. Basterds is getting its fair due with Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and a Best Supporting Actor nom for Christoph Waltz.

Local animation giant Pixar also scored a Best Picture nomination as well as a Best Animated Film one. Its Best Picture nommakes it only the second film, next to Disney's Beauty and the Beast, to earn that slot.
